COP29 President: Climate finance takes centre stage
As the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) approaches, scheduled to be held in Baku this November, Azerbaijan has issued a call for countries to submit their biennial transparency reports (BTRs) in advance of the event.
In a letter addressed to the parties of the conference, COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev emphasized the critical importance of early BTR submissions, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
“Recognizing the diverse starting conditions of each country, the prompt submission of BTRs will serve as a strong demonstration of our collective commitment to transparency,” Babayev stated.
He further highlighted that the COP29 chairmanship is taking decisive actions to ensure ongoing political engagement, bolster cooperation, and enhance capacity building. These initiatives are designed to enable parties to meet their transparency commitments, both during the conference and in the future.
To maintain the momentum for increased transparency, the COP29 Presidency will host a High-Level Dialogue on September 3, 2024. This event will mark the official launch of the Baku Global Platform for Climate Transparency, a flagship initiative aimed at fostering greater transparency in climate action.
Babaye also reiterated that the vision of the COP29 Chairmanship is built on two parallel and complementary pillars: enhancing ambition and catalyzing action. He underscored that “climate finance” stands as the top priority within this framework.
