Denmark sends conscripts to Greenland for Arctic military training
Denmark has deployed conscripts to Greenland for military exercises, giving them an opportunity to train in Arctic conditions that differ sharply from the terrain they are accustomed to at home.
The Danish Ministry of Defence said the conscripts are taking part in the Arctic Endurance exercise, which is designed to provide experience of operating in Greenland's challenging environment, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The group travelled to Greenland in early August. Some of the personnel are currently based in the area around Nuuk, while others are stationed in Kangerlussuaq. The groups are expected to rotate between the two locations during the deployment.
For the conscripts, the exercise offers experience in a landscape characterised by vast open spaces, sparse vegetation and steep rocky terrain.
The deployment comes as Denmark continues to place greater emphasis on Arctic defence and its military presence in Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Training in the region allows Danish personnel to develop skills for operating in the harsh and remote conditions of the Arctic.
