EU strengthens energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, aims to boost gas supplies, renewable energy
At the ministerial meetings in Baku, European Union Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen outlined the EU’s ongoing efforts to modernize infrastructure to enhance access to Azerbaijani gas.
These meetings, held in conjunction with consultative councils on the Southern Gas Corridor and green energy, underscored the EU's commitment to increasing energy security and accelerating the energy transition, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
Jørgensen emphasized the EU’s collective goal to boost gas supplies from Azerbaijan to regional markets in the coming years. He highlighted the importance of leveraging the momentum from Azerbaijan's success at COP29, with the aim of tripling renewable energy generation and doubling energy efficiency globally by 2030. He noted that initiatives such as the Grids and Storage Pledge and the Global Methane Pledge are pivotal in this process.
In addition to boosting gas exports, Jørgensen praised Azerbaijan for its leadership in reducing methane emissions. He recognized the country’s progress in this area and stressed its regional influence, noting growing interest from European businesses and investors in Azerbaijan's rapidly developing renewable energy sector. This shift presents new opportunities for enhancing regional interconnectivity, integrating markets, and developing clean technology value chains.
Discussions also focused on the creation of a "green energy corridor" in the region, which would facilitate energy trade and collaboration on sustainable energy projects. A key point of discussion was the potential for wind energy development in the Caspian Sea. Jørgensen highlighted the significant interest in Azerbaijan’s offshore wind energy potential, particularly after engaging with representatives from the European wind energy industry and the Renewable Energy Agency of Azerbaijan.
Overall, the meetings reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to enhancing energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, fostering renewable energy development, and improving environmental sustainability across the region.
