Kazakhstan–Azerbaijan Caspian fibre-optic cable due by end of 2026
Construction of a fibre-optic cable linking Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan beneath the Caspian Sea is set to be completed by the end of 2026, according to Kazakh officials.
According to Kazakhstan’s media, Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry Zhaslan Madiyev confirmed that work on the project is already underway as part of efforts to boost the country’s transit and digital connectivity potential, Caliber.Az reports.
“The implementation of the construction of a fibre-optic cable along the seabed of the Caspian Sea to the Republic of Azerbaijan has begun. The project is planned to be completed in the third quarter of this year,” Madiyev said.
The undersea cable will have a total length of 391 kilometres and a maximum data transmission capacity of up to 400 terabits per second, significantly enhancing data flows between Central Asia and the South Caucasus.
The project is seen as a key element in strengthening regional digital infrastructure and expanding high-speed data transit routes between Asia and Europe.
