European Commission official credits Baku-Yerevan peace efforts & border delimitation progress
We are greatly encouraged by the ongoing peace efforts and the border delimitation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which have recently commenced, stated Gert Jan Koopman, Director-General of the European Commission for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, during his visit to Baku.
The European Commission views the recent developments in the South Caucasus region in a positive light, Koopman remarked, Report says.
"As far as I know, there is already agreement on four sections of the border," he noted, referring to the ongoing border delimitation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
"Our strategic goal is to facilitate the restoration of peace in the region. We aim to closely cooperate with both Azerbaijan and Armenia, bilaterally and regionally. Therefore, we consider the work being done as very constructive," Koopman emphasized.
Koopman also commended the cooperation between Azerbaijan and Armenia in demining efforts. "Yesterday, I was informed that Azerbaijan has provided Armenia with demining equipment, which is a positive development. It is also heartening to hear that apparently, two women's teams are working together in mine clearance," he added.
As previously reported, following the 8th meeting of the State Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the Delimitation of the State Border with the Republic of Armenia and the Commission of the Republic of Armenia on the Delimitation of the State Border and Border Security with the Republic of Azerbaijan, expert groups from both countries have commenced the process of clarifying coordinates for the Azerbaijan-Armenia border based on mutual agreements.
