Nairobi meeting paves way for Azerbaijan–Kenya legislative partnership PHOTO
Members of the Kenyan Senate — Stewart Madzayo, Tabitha Mutinda, and Hamida Kibwana — who are set to join the friendship group between the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Senate of the Republic of Kenya, have visited the Azerbaijani Embassy in Nairobi.
According to the Azerbaijani Embassy in Kenya, quoted by local media, Ambassador Sultan Hajiyev briefed the senators on Azerbaijan’s development path shaped by the political course of national leader Heydar Aliyev, the restoration and reconstruction efforts in territories liberated from occupation, and the country’s initiatives during its chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement.
He also outlined the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, the proposals put forward during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), and preparations for the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13).
Discussions also touched upon the historic significance of the Joint Declaration signed in Washington last week by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, US President Donald Trump, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
The document was described as a milestone for fostering peace and development not only between Azerbaijan and Armenia but also across the wider region.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides expressed confidence that establishing cooperation between the Milli Majlis and the Kenyan Senate would contribute positively to the momentum of the rapidly expanding ties between Azerbaijan and Kenya.
It was noted that this parliamentary cooperation initiative follows the official visit of Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov to Kenya in June this year. During that visit, an agreement was reached to deepen inter-parliamentary relations, an issue discussed in meetings with Speaker of Kenya’s National Assembly Moses Wetangula and Senate Chairman Amason Jeffah Kingi.
