Pakistani envoy hails Washington summit as milestone in Azerbaijan-Armenia ties

14 August 2025 10:41

The agreement reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington represents a highly positive step for the advancement of bilateral relations, Pakistani Ambassador to Azerbaijan Qasim Mohiuddin told local media.

He stressed that the Washington meeting was a historic summit between US President Donald Trump, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan:

"Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called the president of Azerbaijan and expressed congratulations on this achievement."

Ambassador reaffirmed that Pakistan will not alter its policy towards Armenia without prior consultations with Azerbaijan.

He noted that Pakistan has yet to recognise Armenia as an independent state due to the illegal occupation of Azerbaijani territories.

The ambassador emphasised that Pakistan’s stance reflects long-standing solidarity with Azerbaijan, maintained for over three decades, with any changes contingent on discussions with Azerbaijani authorities.

On August 8, 2025, a Joint Declaration was signed in Washington during a summit hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The leaders endorsed a joint declaration outlining a seven-point framework emphasising sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the renunciation of force.

Foreign ministers from both nations initialled a draft “Agreement on Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations,” witnessed by Trump, Aliyev, and Pashinyan. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the deal as a historic step toward enduring peace.

A key feature of the agreement is the creation of the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP), also called the Zangezur Corridor — a transit passage through Armenia’s Syunik province connecting mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave.
