European Commission warns of long-term fallout from Iran conflict
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that Europe could face long-term consequences from the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, with effects potentially lasting for months or even years.
Speaking at a plenary session of the European Parliament on April 29, she said the EU is interested in maintaining a ceasefire between the parties and insists that peace and stability must be restored exclusively through diplomatic means.
Von der Leyen noted that the impact of the current crisis could have lasting effects on global security and the global economy.
“But there's also a harsh reality we all need to face. The consequences of this conflict may echo for months or even years to come,” she said.
Against this backdrop, she also stressed the need for Europe to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to clean energy.
