FIDE jubilee Chess Cup kicks off in Baku

The 10th jubilee World Chess Cup of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) has started at the Marriott Boulevard Hotel in Baku.

The competition that has triggered great interest is being watched by Azerbaijani Minister of Youth and Sports Farid Gayibov, President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Arkady Dvorkovich, and Azerbaijani Chess Federation President Mahir Mammadov, Trend reports.

Some 206 chess players are attending the open section and 103 in the women's section of the 2023 FIDE World Cup in Baku. Azerbaijan is playing host to the World Chess Cup for the second time.

Azerbaijan is represented by 17 chess players in this championship. They are Shahriyar Mammadyarov, Teymur Rajabov and Gunay Mammadzada, Rauf Mammadov, Gadir Huseynov, Vasif Durarbayli, Nijat Abbasov, Abdulla Gadimbayli, Misratdin Isgandarov, Mahammad Muradli, Vugar Asadli, Riyad Samadov, Aydin Suleymanli, Ulviyya Fataliyeva, Gulnar Mammadova, Khanim Balajayeva, and Govhar Beydullayeva.

In addition, for the first time, the top three players from both the open and women's sections made it to the Candidates Tournament and the 2024 Candidates Tournament.

The games of the FIDE World Cup 2023 are broadcast on the official website of the competition in Azerbaijani and English languages. The competition will continue until August 25. The prize fund of the championship is set at $2.5 million.
