First in Middle East: Qatar frontrunner to host 2036 Summer Olympics

29 May 2024 11:10

Qatar's capital city, Doha, is poised to make history as the frontrunner to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, according to Spanish sports website Relevo.

Negotiations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are nearing completion, paving the way for a formal announcement expected in 2026.

This comes after a competitive bidding process with several other countries vying for the prestigious event. Saudi Arabia, Spain (previously announced for 2024), Indonesia, Chile, India, and Germany were also among the hopeful hosts.

Doha's bid holds significant weight as it would mark the first time the Olympic Games are held in the Middle East region. The IOC often considers a continent's hosting history when awarding the games, and with Paris (2024), Los Angeles (2028), and Brisbane (2032) representing Europe, America, and Oceania respectively, Doha's bid aligns strategically with this unofficial rotation policy.

Qatar boasts experience in hosting major sporting events, having successfully staged the 2022 FIFA World Cup. With advanced infrastructure and a commitment to further development, Doha presents a compelling case for the 2036 Olympics.

The official announcement from the IOC is anticipated in 2026, solidifying Doha's position as the host city and ushering in a new chapter for the Olympic Games in the Middle East.
