Football players break multiple records during latest 2022 World Cup games

11 December 2022 15:31

The 2022 World Cup proves to be unlike any other of the previous tournaments. Besides the major infrastructure investments host-country Qatar undertook for the event, the first to be hosted in an Arab country, the astonishing victories by "the underdogs" over the usual giants of the sport (Germany, Spain, Portugal, Brazil only to name a few) mark this World Cup.

Several sports records have also been broken over the last few days of the tournament, such as for the Brazilian team. Three-time world football champion Pele has congratulated Brazilian forward Neymar on repeating his record for goals for Brazil.

He conveyed the congratulations on Instagram after the team's exit from the World Cup in Qatar on December 9, saying "I saw you grow, I cheered for you every day and I can finally congratulate you for reaching my number of goals with Brazil. We both know that this is more than a figure. Our biggest duty as athletes is to inspire. Inspire our teammates of today, the next generations and, above all, everyone who loves our sport”.

“Unfortunately, this is not the happiest day for us,” Pelé added. “My record was set almost 50 years ago, and nobody had managed to get near it until now. You got there, kid. That shows how great your achievement is”, his post concluded.

The captain of the English national team striker Harry Kane scored his 53rd goal for the national team against France on December 10, breaking a record set by former England player Wayne Rooney, as the BBC reported. Unfortunately, this record also followed the exit of England from the tournament, failing to win against the French rivals.

According to Eurosport, the shining new star of the World Cup, Morrocco, has beaten the record of becoming the first national team representing the African continent to reach the semi-finals of the biggest sports tournament in the world, where they will face current World Champion title holder, France.
