France urges progress in Baku-Yerevan peace talks But keeps arming Armenia
France hopes that Azerbaijan will make progress in peace talks with Armenia before the UN Climate Conference COP29 in Baku.
French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Stephane Sejourne made the remarks at a joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan in Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
“France is in favour of signing as soon as possible a treaty that will establish a just and stable peace, while respecting the sovereignty, territorial integrity of the two countries. This is the whole point of the document signed in Almaty in 1991. In Prague, the same idea was presented to the public,” Sejourne noted.
He also noted that France allegedly facilitates the process of delimitation of the border between the states on the basis of the same principles. Paris believes that the South Caucasus should become a region of peace and cooperation.
“Armenia wants peace. France, and the international community want peace. Since Azerbaijan is about to host COP29, it has a responsibility to show before the event that it sincerely wants to achieve peace. I think we should be able to move quickly on this issue,” the minister said.
The statements of the French minister sound at least strange - instead of addressing Baku, he should have been concerned about the fact that France's patronage of Armenia refuses to amend its constitution and continues to claim the territories of Azerbaijan at the constitutional level.
Moreover, France's military support for Armenia disrupts stability in the South Caucasus, violates international law, shows double standards, and harms the economy. While serving short-term political goals, this policy could harm both Armenia and the region in the long run. Azerbaijan opposes this policy and condemns every provocative action.
