Georgia responds to Germany’s accusations of NGO persecution

Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has sharply rejected Germany’s accusations of persecuting non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

“Absolutely outrageous and unacceptable, on what grounds the government hides information from its own oversight body. The reason given is that NGOs in Georgia are allegedly being persecuted and monitored. This is complete nonsense and merely a pretext to conceal real information,” Papuashvili said, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.

The German government confirmed that it funds NGOs in Georgia but refused to disclose specific organisations.

German authorities argue that “publishing the names of these NGOs would create a significant risk to their operations and staff.”
