Armenian president: Peace with Azerbaijan requires restored trust
Armenia’s President, Vahagn Khachaturyan, has said that lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan will only be possible once mutual trust between the two countries and their peoples is restored.
Speaking to journalists, Khachaturyan emphasised the importance of creating an atmosphere of trust as a prerequisite for a final resolution of tensions, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
“Peace will come when mutual trust between the two countries and their peoples is restored; it is a matter of time. As political leaders, we must ensure the political process and legal frameworks necessary to achieve this situation,” he said.
He noted that a bilateral legal process has already been established, with both countries recognising each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
According to Khachaturyan, the ultimate goal will be reached when citizens on both sides are able to overcome the challenges that persist within their societies.
“None of us can say exactly when this will happen. Of course, we would like it to happen as soon as possible, but the authorities in both countries must create favourable conditions, expand opportunities for contact, and not fear dissent within their populations. I believe there is a strong possibility that this will become a reality,” he added.
Khachaturyan also reflected on global challenges, saying that contemporary issues – from climate change to technological developments and artificial intelligence – require collective action.
“These challenges are common to all countries. Isolation is impossible; working with neighbours in this context should be much simpler and more effective,” he said.
