Georgia's mayor urges Zourabichvili's impeachment to reinforce rule of law

14 October 2024 19:00

Kakha Kaladze, Mayor of Tbilisi and General Secretary of the ruling party "Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia," has outlined the purpose behind the impeachment proceedings against President Salome Zourabichvili of Georgia.

Kaladze emphasised that impeaching Zourabichvili would help prevent further violations of the country’s fundamental laws, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

He also highlighted the importance of ensuring that she is recognised not merely as a former president, but as one who has been removed from office.

"It is regrettable when a person in such a position violates the constitution. She should be the first to uphold the constitution," Kaladze stated.

Notably, the Speaker of Georgia's parliament Shalva Papuashvili announced on October 7 that lawmakers from the ruling party intend to initiate impeachment proceedings against pro-Western President Salome Zourabichvili, just weeks before the parliamentary election set for October 26. This move comes a year after a previous attempt at impeachment failed.

In a press briefing, Papuashvili stated that the charges against Zourabichvili revolve around overseas visits that were allegedly not authorised by the government, echoing accusations made during last year’s impeachment attempt.

Currently, the ruling Georgian Dream party, along with its allies, does not possess enough votes in parliament to successfully impeach the president.

However, Papuashvili expressed optimism that the measure could be approved by a newly elected parliament following the upcoming elections.
