Georgia urges opposition to support impeachment of President Zourabichvili
Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze has called on the opposition to support impeachment against President Salome Zourabichvili, who "tried to hinder the country’s integration into the European Union".
Kobakhidze made the remarks addressing a parliamentary session on the impeachment of the head of state, according to the local First Channel (1TV).
He noted that the country's leader had seriously violated the constitution: "She directly opposed the constitutional order, moreover, she tried to change the de facto constitutional order in the country and directly invade the exclusive competence of the Georgian government to implement both domestic and foreign policy this is a clear violation deserving dismissal.”
According to the party chairman, Zourabichvili continues to violate the basic law of the country.
Kobakhidze called on all opposition MPs who strive to be honest to draw the right conclusions from this situation.
"The president has betrayed the constitution this cannot be left unanswered under any circumstances," Kobakhidze concluded.
On 1 September, the ruling Georgian Dream party announced the start of impeachment proceedings against Zourabichvili, explaining that the president had violated the state's basic law. The decision was backed by six out of nine members of the court. After that, the process moved to the parliament. At the same time, the implementation of impeachment will require not only the votes of the ruling party but also of the opposition.
