Georgian MP slams German envoy's role in political polarisation, hopes Berlin reassesses ties
German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer played an extremely negative role in deepening polarisation in Georgia, but Tbilisi hopes that Berlin will reassess the situation and help restore bilateral relations to their rightful level.
The statement was made by Levan Makhashvili, a member of the ruling party “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
On October 19, the German Foreign Ministry temporarily recalled its ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, for consultations, while the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party submitted an inquiry to the government regarding the ambassador’s activities in Tbilisi.
“The fact is that this ambassador played a very negative role in encouraging polarisation in Georgia. I hope that the German authorities will realise and analyse this. The next steps they take should instead help return bilateral relations to the level they truly deserve,” Makhashvili said.
According to the MP, it will be interesting to see how the German authorities respond and how they actually assess the work of their former ambassador to Georgia.
“It is very good that it’s not only our voices being heard on this matter. We will not succeed, and these issues will remain unanswered, unless the Germans themselves raise these questions with their government. It is a positive sign that such voices are being heard in Germany,” he added.
