Germany approves 100 billion euro fund for defence spending
German Bundesrat (representation of federal states) approved constitutional amendments to set up a 100 billion euro special fund to strengthen Germany's defence forces.
The decision was made on Friday by delegates, according to Germany-based news agency DPA.
It was necessary to make changes to the constitution in order to bypass the rules prohibiting taking such large loans.
Previously, the fund has already been agreed upon by the government and approved by the Bundestag. The vote in the Bundesrat was considered a formality.
It is planned to purchase new armament and improve the material and technical base of the German Armed Forces with the help of this fund. In particular, according to Reuters, about 40 billion euro will go to strengthen the Air Force, including the purchase of new fighters Eurofighter and F-35. The agency noted that 19.3 billion euro will be allocated for the needs of the Navy.
