Germany favours military aid to Israel

Bundestag deputy Roderich Kiesewetter called on the German government to take part in the US-led coalition to defend Israel and offer military support to the Jewish state, Caliber.Az reports.

He noted that the German government should not wait until Israel asks for help, but "offer it on its own initiative and campaign for it in the Bundestag [Parliament]".

On August 3, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that military aid to Israel requires authorization from the Bundestag. He emphasized that the potential involvement is "unimaginable."

Germany is the second largest arms supplier to Israel after the United States. Despite the fact that Israel is on trial before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip, arms sales to that country continue, although a slight decline is being recorded.

A number of countries have stopped supplying arms to Israel on the grounds that "they could be used in a manner that could violate international humanitarian law, resulting in civilian casualties and the destruction of residential structures" in the Gaza Strip, while Germany does not recognize such arguments.
