Germany’s World Cup woes trigger coaching shake-up

03 July 2026 10:43

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann is expected to step down following the national team’s early exit from the World Cup, according to a report by Bild newspaper.

The decision was reportedly made after a meeting with officials from the German Football Association in Frankfurt.

Germany’s elimination marks a third consecutive disappointing World Cup campaign. The team was knocked out in the round of 32 after losing 4–3 on penalties to Paraguay. In the previous two tournaments, in 2018 and 2022, Germany failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Jürgen Klopp has emerged as a leading candidate to succeed Nagelsmann. The German coach previously managed Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

Klopp currently serves as Head of Global Football at Red Bull and is present at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada in his role as a television pundit for MagentaTV.

Germany are next scheduled to face the Netherlands on September 24 in the UEFA Nations League.
