Ghana floods kill three in Adentan, including a child Video
Three people have died in Ghana’s Adentan Municipality following heavy floods on May 18, the newly appointed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ella Esiman Nongo, has confirmed.
“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom and a gentleman around New Legon,” Nongo said in a radio interview on May 19 morning, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The fatalities occurred amid widespread flooding across Accra, which once again spotlighted long-standing issues linked to poor urban planning and the obstruction of natural watercourses.

Commenting on the persistent problem, Nongo pledged to take firm action against unauthorised developments that have worsened the situation. “As we speak, some people have been trapped in their homes. Because a lot more people have built on our waterways, and that is not helping us. So, what we intend to do is to take a very drastic decision against it. It will be a decision that will hurt a few but save a lot of people,” she stated.
She indicated that the municipal assembly will commence demolitions of structures built on water channels as part of efforts to prevent further loss of life and property.

“Demolition of properties will be part of what we will do, because dredging cannot continue. That alone might not solve the problem,” she added.
Nongo’s remarks come as local authorities face increasing pressure to address Accra’s vulnerability to floods, particularly during the rainy season.
