Giant whale spotted in Baku Bay: Real or art installation? PHOTO/VIDEO
A curious sighting in the Bay of Baku has sparked intrigue among locals and environmental enthusiasts alike.
Early on the morning of November 11, Eyyub Huseynov, Chairman of the Union of Free Consumers and a well-known human rights activist reported seeing what appeared to be a giant whale stranded on the shore while on his usual morning jog along the Boulevard, according to Caliber.Az.
“Nearby, there were people in white coats. I think it’s a whale—a baby sperm whale,” Huseynov remarked, sharing a photo of the scene.
Afsana Mehdiyeva, Spokesperson for the Seaside Boulevard Department, promised to provide further information later in the day.
Baku.TV quickly aired a segment on the incident, questioning how a sperm whale—an ocean-dwelling creature—could end up in the closed waters of the Caspian Sea.
However, it appears that the whale sighting may be part of an art installation rather than a natural occurrence.
Reports suggest that the installation is likely the work of the Belgian art group Captain Boomer Collective, known for creating hyper-realistic whale sculptures on beaches in major European cities such as London, Paris, and Valencia. These installations aim to raise awareness about marine environmental protection.
This latest addition in Baku is believed to be a part of this ongoing environmental project.
Caliber.Az will continue to monitor developments surrounding the unusual event.
