Goal-scoring record broken at 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has become the highest-scoring tournament in the competition's history, with a new record set before the conclusion of the group stage.

A total of 177 goals have been scored so far, surpassing the previous record of 172 goals established at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media. 

The milestone comes while the third and final round of group-stage matches is still underway, meaning the overall tally is expected to rise further as the tournament progresses into the knockout rounds.

The expanded 2026 World Cup is the first edition to feature 48 national teams, up from the 32-team format used between 1998 and 2022. The increase in participating teams has resulted in more matches being played, contributing to the record-breaking number of goals.

The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, continues with the final group-stage fixtures before teams advance to the newly expanded knockout phase.
