Hürriyet: Erdoğan and Trump may meet at White House in June
Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Türkiye and Donald Trump of the United States may hold in-person talks in Washington in the coming months.
Citing unnamed sources, Hürriyet said both sides are exploring the possibility of a high-level meeting at the White House, Caliber.Az reports.
Initial discussions had reportedly focused on late April or May, but the timing has since shifted. “The emphasis is now on June,” the newspaper noted.
Note that, in a recent phone call, Erdoğan expressed support for Trump's efforts to end the Russia- Ukraine war and emphasized the need for increased U.S.-Türkiye consultations on global issues. He also urged the lifting of U.S. sanctions imposed due to Turkey's acquisition of Russian S-400 missile systems and advocated for Türkiye's reintegration into the F-35 fighter jet program, alongside finalizing the purchase of new F-16 jets.
Earlier, Trump commended Erdoğan for his role in Syria, following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
Trump emphasised the strong rapport between himself and Erdoğan, underlining the importance of Türkiye’s involvement in Syria.
He acknowledged Türkiye’s considerable presence in the region, recounting a conversation with Erdoğan: “You’ve taken it over through surrogates.” He added, “I said, ‘Congratulations, you’ve done what nobody’s been able to do in 2,000 years. You’ve taken over Syria.’ With different names, but same thing.”
