IOC suspends esports commission as it reassesses strategy
04 May 2026 19:44
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the suspension of its esports commission, expressing intent to establish a more comprehensive approach aligned with the Olympic movement’s overall strategy.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry, who succeeded Thomas Bach in March 2025, sent a letter to commission members in January stating that she would take personal control of esports development, Caliber.Az reports, citing Kyodo.
The IOC said the commission’s activities have now concluded.
The commission was established in 2023 under Thomas Bach, during a period when the IOC actively expanded its engagement in esports.
It organised tournaments exploring the possibility of including esports in the Olympic Games program.
