Iran condemns sanctions as ineffective, calls for mutual respect in negotiations

16 September 2024 11:31

Iranian Foreign Minister, Sayyed Abbas Araghchi, stated that Iran has never turned its back on "constructive dialogue" with the West, but emphasized that any negotiations must be founded on mutual respect, rather than threats or coercion.

Araghchi's comments came in response to new sanctions imposed by the United States and other Western countries against Iran, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.

“It is surprising that Western nations still do not understand that sanctions are a failed tool. They cannot impose their intent on Iran through these measures,” Araghchi said.

According to him, both in nuclear negotiations and other matters; the West’s reliance on sanctions has proven to be ineffective.

“We have always been open to constructive dialogue to reach a mutual understanding on contentious issues. However, dialogue must be based on mutual respect, not threats and pressure,” he added.

Notably, the US Treasury Department has recently strengthened its sanctions, focusing on 20 individuals, organisations, and ships in Iran and Russia, including Iran Air, claiming that Iran supplied ballistic missiles to Russia for the Ukraine conflict.

Tehran has firmly rejected these accusations. Meanwhile, Germany, the UK, and France issued a joint statement accusing Iran of sending missiles to Russia. They also announced the termination of bilateral air service agreements with Iran and imposed further sanctions on Iran Air.
