Iran considers nuclear doctrine change after supreme leader's decision

18 October 2024 20:30

Iran may alter its nuclear doctrine following a directive from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ahmed Ariainejad, a member of the Iranian parliament, said.

However, he emphasized that any such decision should remain "secret from the enemy," Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

In response to a letter from 39 lawmakers advocating for the development of nuclear weapons, Ariainejad explained, “The MPs who signed the letter are guided by their considerations and the fatwa of the supreme leader that the production of weapons of mass destruction is forbidden from the point of view of Islam.”

He noted that while the fatwa addresses weapons of mass destruction, it may not apply to “weapons of mass destruction that are defensive in nature,” suggesting that further expert analysis is needed.

“We should keep our decision secret because we should never put our trump cards in the hands of a heavily armed enemy,” he added, indicating a cautious approach to nuclear capabilities.

Commenting on the US transfer of a THAAD missile defence battery to Israel, Ariainejad stated, “No matter what modern weapons the enemy uses, we will not stop fighting. We consider the Israeli occupation regime equal to the American regime; it does not matter to us whether the new air defence system is operated by mercenaries of the American terrorist army or servants of the Americans in the Israeli army.”

He further accused the US of destabilizing the region, asserting, “We believe that we should also settle scores with them because it is the US that has destabilized our region.”
