Türkiye's advanced defence systems may boost Europe's Sky Shield Initiative
While the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), led by Germany, aims to strengthen the continent's missile defence system, the information that Türkiye might join the project have had the impact of a bombshell.
The Belgium-based Euractiv company stated that if Türkiye joins the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), Europe's defence capabilities would significantly increase, and a more powerful air defence network compatible with NATO would be created, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.
ESSI is a comprehensive initiative designed to enhance Europe's missile defence against Russia and other potential threats. However, the project, which faces both technical and political challenges, could gain substantial momentum with the participation of a country like Türkiye, with its advanced military-industrial infrastructure.
Türkiye's own air defence systems, developed to counter ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles, closely align with the technologies required for ESSI. Experts interviewed by Euractiv believe that Türkiye's inclusion in the project would not only strengthen Europe's strategic defense but also deepen cooperation with NATO. While no official statements have been made regarding Türkiye's participation in ESSI, the growing defence collaboration between Germany and Türkiye enhances the likelihood of such an outcome.
Moreover, experts emphasised that with Türkiye's involvement, Europe's missile defence system would become far more effective, significantly boosting the continent's security. Specifically, Türkiye’s advanced air defense systems, such as HİSAR-A, HİSAR-O, and SİPER, are considered key assets for ESSI.
