Iran's nuclear program under spotlight: IAEA to release detailed report

26 February 2025 17:21

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is set to present a comprehensive report on Iran's nuclear program at its upcoming meeting, following mounting pressure from European countries.

Mohammad Eslami, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), confirmed that the report will be submitted in response to the increasing scrutiny on Iran’s nuclear activities, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

In a statement to the press, Eslami outlined that the IAEA's report would be divided into two sections. The first part will focus on inspections carried out by the agency, while the second will address the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, which governs Iran’s nuclear activities. Eslami noted that the three European signatories of the JCPOA have ramped up pressure on Iran, leading to the IAEA’s decision to prepare the report for the agency’s next session.

"We hope that the IAEA will approach the report with professionalism and avoid any political bias," Eslami remarked, emphasizing Iran’s continued cooperation with the IAEA and its commitment to ongoing supervision by the agency.

This development follows a resolution passed by the IAEA Board of Governors on November 21, 2024, which criticized Iran for allegedly insufficient cooperation with the organization. The resolution called for a detailed report on Iran’s nuclear program by the spring of 2025. The resolution passed with 19 votes in favor, three votes against, and 12 abstentions.

In response to the IAEA’s stance, Iranian authorities have announced plans to commission additional centrifuges to accelerate their uranium enrichment activities, further complicating the already tense situation. These actions are part of Iran’s broader response to what it views as increasing international pressure over its nuclear ambitions.

As the IAEA prepares its report, the international community will closely monitor developments, with particular attention on the balance between diplomatic efforts, the JCPOA framework, and Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
