Iran seeks Russia’s help to restore ties with Syria
Iran hopes to restore relations with Syria and is seeking Russia’s assistance, given Moscow’s close ties with Damascus.
Syria fully understands that it cannot become a significant player in the complex Middle Eastern equations or effectively interact with neighbouring powers without reducing tensions with Iran, IRNA reports, citing an unnamed source.
The source noted that Tehran sees two scenarios for its relations with Damascus, with the most likely being one that involves easing tensions and creating a foundation for dialogue and cooperation between the two countries.
“This scenario requires continued consultations between Tehran and Moscow, taking into account the interests of Iran and the temporary Syrian government,” the article emphasises.
The December 8, 2024, fall of Assad—following a lightning Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) offensive from Idlib—severed Iran-Syria ties, with the transitional government under Ahmed al-Sharaa. HTS, designated a terrorist organisation by the U.S., EU, and Türkiye until 2025 delistings, has distanced itself from Iran, closing IRGC offices and expelling Shia militias. Israel capitalised with over 300 airstrikes in December 2024–January 2025, destroying 80% of Syria's air defences and targeting Iranian-linked sites, while Türkiye expanded influence via the Syrian National Army in the north.
