Iraqi Kurdistan sends reinforcements to Iranian border
The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has deployed additional forces to the border with Iran, Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji said.
According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), al-Araji stated that the Kurdistan Region’s Interior Ministry sent reinforcements from the Kurdish militia to the border area.
His press office explained that the decision followed a telephone conversation with Ali Bagheri, deputy secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, during which the situation in the region was discussed.
During the call, Bagheri emphasised that Iran’s strikes are confined to US military bases and do not target civilian infrastructure, including embassies, hospitals, and oil fields. He also called on Iraq to take steps to prevent any opposition groups from crossing the shared border, in accordance with the security agreement previously signed between Baghdad and Tehran.
Al-Araji, for his part, said Iraq is continuing diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the crisis and remains committed to implementing the bilateral security agreement with Iran by preventing the infiltration of armed groups across the frontier. The additional forces, he noted, are tasked with ensuring full control over the section of the border administered by Erbil.
