ISW: Iranian proxies may not stop shelling Israel during ceasefire

24 November 2023 12:16

The entire Axis of Resistance has been involved in the escalation against the United States and Israel since October 7 and it is unclear how its non-Hamas members will react to the truce announced by Israel and Hamas on November 23.

Axis of Resistance groups, including the Houthis and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq—a coalition of Iranian-backed Iraqi militias, have continued to attack Israel while Israel and Hamas discussed the terms of the pause agreement, Caliber.Az reports citing analysts of the US-based think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Houthi fighters hijacked an Israeli-owned, Japanese-operated freighter transiting the Red Sea on November 19 and launched a cruise missile at Eilat on November 22. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq also began using close-range ballistic missiles against US forces in November, including on November 21.

It is unclear how this pattern will progress during the pause, as Hamas and Israel are the only combatant parties explicitly bound by the agreement, the analysts said.
