Italian media take note of Azerbaijan’s sporting success on global stage

Italian media have drawn attention to Azerbaijan’s expanding sporting profile, highlighting the country’s progress across major disciplines and its growing visibility on the international stage.

An article published by the “UniversalNews” portal examines how Formula 1 and football have helped strengthen Azerbaijan’s presence in global sports. It points out that Baku is set to host the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 26, while the Baku City Circuit has played an important role in showcasing the capital internationally since 2016.

The publication also focuses on the rise of Azerbaijani football, citing FC Qarabağ’s established record in UEFA club competitions and Sabah’s rapid progress in recent years, which has included reaching the Champions League league phase.

According to the article, Baku’s experience in hosting Formula 1, football and other international sporting events reflects the development of its sports infrastructure and its capacity to stage major competitions.

It adds that the combination of Formula 1 and football has helped enhance Azerbaijan’s international sporting visibility, with Baku increasingly gaining prominence as a sports centre in the Caucasus.
