Japan launches new command to fortify defence, strengthen US military ties

24 March 2025 18:47

Japan has launched a new command for its Self-Defence Forces (SDF) to better integrate ground, maritime, and air defence operations amid growing regional security concerns.

The newly established SDF Joint Operations Command (JJOC) is aimed at improving coordination between Japan’s defense services and facilitating smoother joint operations with US forces, Caliber.Az reports via Japanese media.

The new command, located at the Defence Ministry in Tokyo, will be led by Gen. Kenichiro Nagumo, an expert in SDF joint operations, and staffed with approximately 240 personnel. This move is part of Japan's broader strategy to enhance its defense capabilities as security tensions rise, particularly with China’s increasing assertiveness regarding Taiwan and North Korea’s missile and nuclear advancements.

Defence Minister Gen Nakatani emphasized the importance of the new command, stating, "Our nation is facing the most severe and complicated security environment in the postwar era," and that the establishment of the JJOC is of "great significance."

Previously, the Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff was responsible for overseeing the combined operations of the Ground Self-Defence Force (GSDF), Maritime Self-Defence Force (MSDF), and Air Self-Defence Force (ASDF). However, the workload proved overwhelming, especially in large-scale emergencies like the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster. The new structure separates responsibilities, allowing the Chief of Joint Staff to focus on advising the defence minister, while the JJOC takes charge of operational command.

The JJOC will hold broad authority during contingencies, including the allocation of forces and leading cross-domain operations involving outer space and cyberspace. Gen. Nagumo stated, "We will respond to situations seamlessly, from peacetime to a contingency, to defend the lives of our citizens and their ability to live in peace as well as our nation's territory, waters and airspace."

This restructuring aligns with similar efforts by the US to modernize its military presence in Japan. Despite these efforts, concerns persist in Japan about the potential for the SDF to fall under US military command in the event of a crisis, particularly in relation to Taiwan and nearby territorial disputes.
