Kremlin: No full details on Israel-Iran ceasefire
Press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov has said that the Kremlin does not have comprehensive information regarding the ceasefire reportedly reached between Israel and Iran and therefore cannot offer any official comment on the situation.
Peskov noted at a recent briefing that the ceasefire discussions involved mediation by Qatar and communications between the US president and several Middle Eastern leaders. However, the Kremlin remains unaware of the full specifics and thus cannot provide definitive remarks, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The diplomat further warned that numerous actors appear intent on “adding fuel to the fire” in a way that could undermine the relationship between Russia and Iran.
When asked to address claims by analysts likening Iran’s current situation to the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, with suggestions that Moscow had failed to support Tehran adequately, Peskov acknowledged the prevalence of such opinions.
“There are many such perspectives,” Peskov said. “Many seek to exploit the situation to stir tensions and damage the Russia-Iran ties. This is understandable. Russia has clearly supported Iran, a position that was highly valued during recent talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. We intend to continue strengthening our relations with Iran.”
US President Donald Trump has announced a “complete and total” ceasefire between Israel and Iran, set to be phased in over the next 24 hours after a frenetic day of conflict in the region. The announcement follows an attack on US forces at Al Udeid airbase in Qatar on June 23, after Tehran said it would retaliate for the US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, with the Qatari authorities saying missiles were successfully intercepted.
