Kyrgyzstan, Cyprus agree to expand cooperation during FMs’ talks in Bishkek

08 June 2026 13:38

Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Zheenbek Kulubaev held talks on June 8  with Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, who was on his first official visit to Kyrgyzstan, the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry said.

During the meeting, Kulubaev expressed satisfaction with the current level of bilateral relations and reaffirmed Kyrgyzstan’s readiness to expand cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture, and humanitarian affairs. Both sides also highlighted the potential for deeper collaboration in tourism, noting opportunities for experience-sharing and joint projects, Caliber.Az reports.

The ministers also discussed Kyrgyzstan’s election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term. Kombos congratulated Kyrgyzstan on the achievement and expressed support for its forthcoming role. Kulubaev outlined the country’s priorities as a future Council member.

Attention was also given to cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the European Union, particularly in light of Cyprus holding the EU Council presidency in the first half of 2026. The Kyrgyz side expressed appreciation for EU support in areas such as socio-economic reforms, institutional development, human capital, and sustainable development.

At the same time, Kulubaev raised concerns over the growing use of EU sanctions policy, warning of potential negative effects on Kyrgyzstan’s trade, economic, and financial sectors. He emphasized opposition to the politicization of international economic relations while calling for continued dialogue on mutually beneficial solutions.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining political dialogue and expanding practical cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels.

At the conclusion of the talks, the two foreign ministries signed a Cooperation Programme covering the 2027–2028 period.
