La Liga chief urges Infantino to step down as FIFA president

President of Spain’s La Liga Javier Tebas has criticised FIFA President Gianni Infantino's handling of football competitions, noting that he should step down from his post.

Tebas argued that the governing body organises tournaments according to its own preferences, Caliber.Az reports, citing Italian media.

"FIFA organises everything however it wants. If they need a 27-minute break, they do it. Water breaks are a farce — they're advertising breaks. We have them in La Liga too, but only when it's genuinely very hot. Then there was the Balogun case," Tebas added.

He also dismissed the idea of expanding the FIFA World Cup to 64 teams.

"It makes no sense. The football industry is not limited to the World Cup. Domestic leagues sustain football. The football industry is being undermined for the sake of a 40-day tournament involving a minority of players," he stressed.

Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final, with Ferran Torres scoring the only goal in the 106th minute.
