Latvia honours memory of January 20 tragedy victims
An event dedicated to the anniversary of the tragic events of January 20, 1990, in Azerbaijan and 1991 in Latvia was held at the Museum of Barricades in the Latvian capital Riga.
Report informs citing the Azerbaijani Embassy in Latvia that at the event, organised by the diplomatic mission together with the Museum of Barricades, a minute's silence was held to commemorate the martyrs who gave their lives for the independence and territorial integrity of the country.
At the event, the Director of the Barricade Museum Renars Zalais stressed the importance of the date of January 20 for both nations and noted that these two tragic dates are celebrated in Latvia and Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Latvia Elnur Sultanov informed the participants of the event about the brutal killings committed by the Soviet army in Azerbaijan against civilians on the night of January 19-20, 1990 on the orders of the Soviet leadership.
The event was attended by members of the Latvian parliament, heads of diplomatic missions, members of the Azerbaijani community living in Latvia, as well as students studying in this country.
After the speeches, a video about the January 20 tragedy was shown.
A photo exhibition dedicated to the bloody January tragedy was also organised as part of the event.
