Le Monde: Conference on Ukraine fails to achieve significant progress

17 June 2024 12:17

Participants of the conference on Ukraine, which was held in Bürgenstock on June 15-16, failed to make significant progress on the issue of achieving peace in the conflict.

As TASS reports, this assessment was made by the French newspaper Le Monde.

According to the newspaper, the final communiqué turned out to be "weak and binding" on the parties to the conflict. The text of the document does not mention any progress or "first steps" towards peace in Ukraine. It only cites well-known ideas regarding "the principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all states, including Ukraine", the newspaper said.

Le Monde notes that even those countries that were expected to sign the document due to the "moderate" position on the conflict in Ukraine expressed in it did not do so.

Among the main topics discussed at the conference were nuclear and food security, ensuring navigation, and exchange of prisoners of war, among others. Russia was not invited to Bürgenstock. Representatives of Western countries dominated among the participants. The communiqué was adopted without taking Russia's opinion into account.

At first, the conference organizers reported that 80 countries supported the communiqué. However, later their number was reduced to 78, and Jordan and Iraq disappeared from the initial list. Thus, the number of countries that refused to support the final document increased to 15.
