Lionel Messi to travel with Argentina for the 2026 World Cup
Lionel Messi has been included in Argentina’s squad for the World Cup despite concerns over a recent injury.
According to dpa, the 38-year-old forward was named in the 26-man squad selected by coach Lionel Scaloni, becoming one of 17 players from the 2022 World Cup-winning team to retain their place.
The squad also includes Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández, Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, and Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.
Messi’s club, Inter Miami CF, reported that he experienced “physical discomfort” before being substituted late in an MLS match against Philadelphia, which ended 6–4. He was seen holding the back of his thigh after taking a free kick and immediately heading to the dressing room.
Messi had previously stated that he would only participate in the tournament if fully fit. The upcoming World Cup will be his sixth appearance in the competition.
Argentina will begin its title defence against the Algerian national football team on June 16.
