Liz Truss faces $15,000 bill for Chevening country house "parties"
01 May 2023 11:36
Liz Truss is understood to have been handed a £12,000 ($15,000) bill to cover the cost of food and drink as well as bathrobes and slippers that are said to have disappeared from her grace and favour country home when she was foreign secretary.
The Cabinet Office sent Truss the invoice for costs arising from her stays at the Chevening estate, which she frequently used in the latter stages of last summer’s Tory leadership campaign, The Times reports.
The 17th-century house, which is made available to foreign secretaries, was used by Truss and her aides as they made plans for her taking over as prime minister.
A source told The Mail on Sunday that officials have contacted Truss and made clear that she needs to pay for items that went missing during her tenure, as well as the food and wine she and her aides consumed there.
The government pays for the cost of official business at Chevening but not for entertaining personal guests or party political business.
Truss is understood to be contesting the bill, arguing that the Cabinet Office is trying to charge her for food and drink at meetings attended by senior civil servants, including Simon Case, the cabinet secretary.
Truss was reported to have hosted guests at Chevening on the weekends of August 19-21 and September 2-4 during the leadership campaign.
A spokesman for Truss, who plans to stand again as an MP at the next election, said the invoice would be disputed.
“Liz always paid for the costs of her personal guests at Chevening,” he said. “The latest invoice contains a mixture of costs for her personally and costs for official government business with civil servants including [cabinet secretary] Simon Case and senior officials from other departments who met at Chevening during the transition preparations.
“The latter constitutes the majority of the bill. It would be inappropriate for her to pay the costs for officials as it would have breached the civil service code for civil servants to accept hospitality during the leadership campaign.
She has therefore asked for this to be billed separately.’”
Another source added: “This invoice for August 2022 was only sent to Liz by Chevening earlier this month. She has requested an accurate invoice and will settle that once received.”
