Louvre director resigns amid security, management challenges
Laurence des Cars, director of the Louvre Museum, has resigned from her position, with French President Emmanuel Macron accepting her decision, according to Le Monde.
Macron described des Cars’ resignation as “an act of responsibility” and noted that the museum needs a “new momentum” to carry out major projects, including strengthening security measures and modernising the institution.
Des Cars made history in 2021 as the first woman to lead the Louvre.
In recent months, the world’s most visited museum has faced heightened scrutiny over security concerns, labour disputes, and an alleged ticket fraud scheme, Associated Press reports. In October 2025, the Louvre suffered a high-profile theft in which artworks valued at approximately €88 million were stolen in under eight minutes. Several suspects were later arrested, but the stolen items have not yet been recovered.
