Macron: France would not take part in Trump’s Strait of Hormuz military initiative
French President Emmanuel Macron has voiced reservations about a US-announced operation aimed at ensuring the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, citing a lack of clarity over its scope and objectives.
Speaking upon his arrival in Yerevan for the summit of the European Political Community, Macron said France would not take part in any military initiative without a clearly defined framework, Caliber.Az reports per French media.
“If the United States is ready to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, that’s positive and aligns with our goals. However, we will not participate in military operations within a framework that is not clear,” he said.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the launch of an operation to secure maritime navigation in the region, amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. Iranian authorities have warned they could target U.S. forces if they move closer to the strategic waterway.
Macron also stressed the importance of maintaining stability elsewhere in the region, calling for adherence to the ceasefire in Lebanon following renewed attacks. He urged all sides to avoid further escalation.
