Macron starts new round of consultations for prime minister nominee
French President Emmanuel Macron is reportedly deliberating between two prominent figures for the role of Prime Minister, according to French media sources.
The Elysee Palace has been tight-lipped about the decision, but discussions suggest that former Socialist Prime Minister Bernard Cazneuve and centre-right politician Xavier Bertrand are the leading contenders, Caliber.Az reports, citing French media.
Cazneuve, who previously served as Prime Minister and Interior Minister, is seen as a potential candidate due to his extensive experience in government. On the other hand, Xavier Bertrand, a seasoned politician with multiple cabinet positions and currently serving as president of the Hauts-de-France region, has also emerged as a strong candidate. Macron reportedly met with Bertrand earlier this week to discuss the possibility.
Thierry Baudet, the head of the Council for Economic, Social and Environmental Affairs, appears to be a less likely choice at this stage. Despite initial speculation, sources close to the discussions suggest that Baudet's candidacy is now considered improbable.
In light of these developments, Macron is embarking on a new phase of consultations with political stakeholders. This time, the consultations are being conducted via telephone, reflecting the ongoing shifts and considerations within French politics.
Bertrand, when approached for comment, was reticent and stated, "I remain president of the region." This response adds to the intrigue surrounding the final decision, as Macron weighs his options in what could be a pivotal move for his administration.
