Manuel Neuer returns as Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper for World Cup
Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been included in Germany’s World Cup squad as the first-choice goalkeeper, marking a return from international retirement, according to dpa.
The 40-year-old Bayern Munich player had originally stepped away from international football in 2024 after a distinguished 15-year career with the national team, during which he earned 124 caps and played a key role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph.
Neuer has now been recalled by head coach Julian Nagelsmann following an injury to his intended successor, Marc-André ter Stegen. Nagelsmann opted for Neuer due to his extensive experience at major international tournaments, which he brings in contrast to Oliver Baumann, who had featured in all of Germany’s qualifying matches.
The upcoming World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will mark Neuer’s fifth appearance at the tournament. Germany, four-time World Cup winners, will be aiming to improve on recent performances after being eliminated at the group stage in both the 2018 and 2022 editions.
Nagelsmann has named a 26-player squad for the tournament, which also includes Bayern Munich teenager Lennart Karl. Prior to the official announcement, around a dozen players had already been confirmed, led by team captain Joshua Kimmich.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich’s reserve goalkeeper Jonas Urbig will travel with the team delegation but has not been included in the final squad.
