Mass protests erupt across France over economic policies Clashes reported in Paris, Marseille
France has been gripped by a wave of large-scale protests as citizens take to the streets in growing opposition to the government's economic policies. Demonstrations erupted in multiple cities, including Paris and Marseille, sparking confrontations with police and raising concerns about escalating civil unrest.
Thousands of protesters gathered at Place de la Nation in eastern Paris, where scenes quickly turned tense. Demonstrators set fire to rubbish bins, and riot police deployed to the area attempted to disperse the crowds and restore order. Video footage from the scene showed plumes of smoke rising above the square as law enforcement formed containment lines, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
In Marseille, France’s second-largest city, several hundred demonstrators blocked central streets, using overturned rubbish bins and makeshift barricades to halt traffic. Authorities are reportedly struggling to maintain control in several districts as tensions remain high.
The protests, which have been organized under the slogan “Block Everything”, are aimed at halting the government’s proposed economic reforms, which critics claim disproportionately impact working-class citizens and public sector employees.
In anticipation of nationwide unrest, the French government has deployed 80,000 security personnel across the country. Interior Ministry sources have confirmed the mobilization is intended to ensure public safety and prevent the protests from spiraling into violence similar to past episodes of civil disobedience.
As many as 100,000 people could participate in the demonstrations, which are expected to intensify over the coming days. Protest organizers have called for sustained action and widespread disruption until the government agrees to reconsider its economic agenda.
