McLaren, Ferrari racers optimistic about victory at Azerbaijan Grand Prix

15 September 2024 10:30

As the Azerbaijan Grand Prix approaches, McLaren driver Oscar Piastri expressed optimism about his chances for victory after an impressive performance in the qualifying session in Baku on September 14.

"On the final lap, I went on the attack, trying to get as close to the walls as possible. This track rewards risk, and I realized I had nothing to lose. I aimed to squeeze the most out of the car, and I’m happy with my lap. I think we have a chance to fight for victory, but it will not be easy," Piastri told local media, Caliber.Az reports.

Piastri secured the second-fastest time in the qualifying session, positioning him well for a competitive race.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who claimed pole position for the fourth consecutive time in Baku, also shared his thoughts on the challenging track.

“The track in Baku is one of my favourites on the season calendar. I really like it," Leclerc said, reflecting on his earlier mishap during the first free practice. "The weekend didn’t start easily with my crash, but it didn’t affect my confidence. I knew the pace was there. In qualifying, it was crucial not to hit the barriers, and on my last lap, I pushed a little harder and managed to set a great time. The car felt fantastic, and I’m very happy to have won pole."

The main race of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will take place on September 15, with both drivers looking forward to fighting for the win.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is set to conclude on September 15, with the qualification rounds shaping up to be a critical determinant of the grid positions for the main event. Fans and teams alike are eagerly awaiting the outcomes as the drivers prepare for what promises to be a thrilling race in the heart of Baku.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2024, running from September 13-15, continues to capture global attention. The event, which first debuted in 2017, is held on the Baku City Circuit, a renowned street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital. The race is set to remain at this venue until at least 2026.

The Baku City Circuit Operations Company anticipates a record-breaking global viewership for this year's Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Approximately 300 journalists, including about 200 from international media outlets such as Sky Sports, Motorsport, Canal+, Netflix, and The Sun, are covering the event and bringing the excitement of the races on Baku’s streets to audiences worldwide.
