Media: US concerned over rapid expansion of China's nuclear capabilities
The United States is increasingly alarmed by the rapid expansion of China's nuclear potential.
A recent bipartisan commission report to Congress has raised significant concerns about China's development of a comprehensive nuclear triad, alongside existing nuclear threats from Russia and North Korea, Caliber.Az reports, citing Newsweek.
The experts emphasize the importance of the US continuing to modernize its nuclear capabilities at a comparable pace to maintain strategic stability.
Although China currently possesses fewer nuclear weapons than the US or Russia, it has been swiftly expanding and modernizing its arsenal. The Stockholm International Peace Institute estimates that China could potentially double its stockpile from an estimated 500 warheads to 1,000 by the end of the decade.
"For decades, China has endeavoured to build and maintain a credible nuclear retaliatory capability. It has done so to ensure a relationship of mutual vulnerability with the United States," stated Tong Zhao, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
