MEP: Slovakia open to hosting Russia-Ukraine talks
Slovakia has expressed its readiness to host future negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, according to Ľuboš Blaha, a Member of the European Parliament.
In an interview with Russian state news agency TASS, Blaha emphasized Slovakia’s commitment to peace and its willingness to play a role in resolving tensions between Russia and other countries, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports.
Blaha responded affirmatively when asked if Slovakia would be interested in becoming the venue for upcoming Russian-American talks. However, he noted that Slovakia is a small country, which might limit its role in global affairs. Despite this, Blaha pointed to historical examples, such as Norway, which hosted major negotiations despite its size.
"If the opportunity arises for Slovakia to host negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, or between Russia and other nations, we are prepared to provide all necessary support," Blaha said.
Highlighting Slovakia’s peace-driven philosophy, Blaha reiterated that the country views Russia as a partner and believes cooperation is essential. "Our philosophy is peace. We will do everything we can to achieve peace between Europe and Russia," he stated.
Blaha acknowledged that decisions on such negotiations are typically made by larger powers, with key figures likely to include Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. President Donald Trump, and potentially other European leaders.
He also noted that Slovakia's stance on the Ukrainian conflict has not been well-received by some European leaders, who have expressed dissatisfaction with the country's position.
