Merz: Peace deal with Azerbaijan opens path to Armenia’s EU integration
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the initialling of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia has opened an opportunity for Yerevan to pursue European integration.
He made the remarks at a press conference in Berlin following talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Merz noted that the peace process between Yerevan and Baku demonstrates that “joint efforts, diplomacy, and mutual respect can lead to sustainable peace processes”. He underlined that peace with Azerbaijan has been the key factor that opened prospects for Armenia on its European path.
The Chancellor stressed that Armenia’s path to EU membership requires fulfilling the Copenhagen criteria.
Pashinyan, for his part, described his visit to Germany as “historic” and said that relations between the two countries have reached the level of a strategic partnership.
He added that he attaches great importance to Germany’s support for deepening the Armenia–EU partnership and expressed hope for continued political backing “on the difficult and lengthy journey” towards EU membership.
